Emission spectroscopy using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was developed in the mid-1960s1,2 as a rapid, sensitive, and convenient method for the determination of metals in water and wastewater samples.3–6 Dissolved metals are determined in filtered and acidified samples. Total metals are determined after appropriate digestion. Care must be taken to ensure that potential interferences are dealt with, especially when dissolved solids exceed 1500 mg/L.
