Oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions mediate the behavior of many chemical constituents in drinking, process, and wastewaters as well as most aquatic compartments of the environment.1–5 The reactivities and mobilities of important elements in biological systems (e.g., Fe, S, N, and C), and those of a number of other metallic elements, depend strongly on redox conditions. Reactions involving both electrons and protons are pH- and Eh-dependent. Therefore, chemical reactions in aqueous media often can be characterized by pH and Eh together with the activity of dissolved chemical species. Like pH, Eh represents an intensity factor.
