Emergent plants are important components of aquatic and wetland ecosystems. They are among the primary producers, providing oxygen, food, and habitat for periphyton and many other organisms, including invertebrates, fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals. These plants function in nutrient cycling and in stabilizing sediments of near-shore environments.
