The ephedrine alkaloids are extracted from the matrix with methanol–50 mM aqueous monobasic potassium phosphate. The extract is treated by solid-phase extraction (SPE) on a strong-cation exchange (SCX) column, and the ephedrine alkaloids are eluted from the SPE column with methanol–ammonium hydroxide. After dilution and neutralization, the alkaloids are separated by isocratic high-performance .liquid chromatography (HPLC) on an ether-linked phenyl column and measured in the UV at 210 nm.
