Fumonisins are extracted from corn and corn flakes with methanol–acetonitrile–water (25 + 25 + 50,v/v/v), the filtered extract is cleaned up by an immunoa}nity column, and the fumonisins are eluted with methanol. The eluate is evaporated just to dryness, and the residue is dissolved in acetonitrile–water (50 + 50, v/v). o-Phthaldialdehyde and 2-mercaptoethanol is added to form fluorescent fumonisin derivatives,which are separated by reversed-phase liquid chromatography (LC) with fluorescence detection.
