Outbreaks associated with foodborne illness are a serious public health and economic problem in the United States. Current estimates suggest that, each year, around 47.8 million persons become ill from foodborne diseases, 127,839 are hospitalized, and 3,037 of these individuals die.40 The actual incidence of foodborne illness, however, may be 10 to 200 times higher than these numbers, because many afflicted persons do not seek medical treatment, or reports are not made to health agencies by the victims or by the health care providers. The estimated cost of foodborne disease is approximately $77.7 billion annually.
