This method determines the alkalinity (proportion of alkali) in a fat or oil by titration with hydrochloric acid. The alkalinity of animal and vegetable fats and oils is determined without distinguishing between the various constituents. The method is not applicable to dry melted animal fats, nor to oils and fats with an acidity greater than 60% (mass fraction). Use AOCS Official Method Cd 3d-63 for test samples in this range. This method is identical to ISO 10539 (2002).
