This method determines the alkalinity (proportion of alkali) in a fat or oil by titration with hydrochloric acid. The alkalinity of animal and vegetable fats and oils is determined without distinguishing between the ­various constituents. The method is not applicable to dry melted animal fats, nor to oils and fats with an acidity greater than 60% (mass fraction). Use AOCS Official Method Cd 3d-63 for test samples in this range. This method is identical to ISO 10539 (2002).
