DEFINITION This method should be used for the determination of campesta-3,5-diene, stigmasta-3,5,22-triene, and stigmasta-3,5-diene (hydrocarbons originating from sterols during refining or desterolizing treatments applied to vegetable oils). The standard may be used to detect desterolized oils—particularly desterolized seed oils—in refined olive oil and refined olive residue oil. The procedure may also be used to quantify stigmasta-3,5-diene in oils where it occurs at a concentration greater than 4.0 mg/kg; this method is less rigorous for this purpose than AOCS method Cd 26-96 for the determination of stigmasta-3,5-diene in vegetable oils. The method consists of isolation of the steroidal hydrocarbon fraction by column chromatography on silica gel and analysis by capil-lary gas chromatography (References, 1). SCOPE Vegetable oils.
