Stigmastadienes in Vegetable Oils

2017

665.0288 AOCS 7th ed. 2017-2019 rev. Ref. (Loose-Leaves FL2)

DEFINITION This is a rigorous method for the determination of stigmasta-3,5-diene in vegetable oils containing low concentrations of these hydrocarbons, particularly virgin olive oils and crude olive pomace oil. The method is particularly suited to detecting the presence of refined vegetable oils (olive, olive pomace, sunflower, palm, etc.) in virgin olive oil, since refined oils contain stigmastadienes and virgin oils do not. The method consists of isolation of unsaponifiable matter, separation of steroidal hydrocarbon fraction by column chromatography on silica gel, and analysis by capillary gas chromatography (Reference 1). SCOPE Applicable to all vegetable oils, although measurements are reliable only where the content of these hydrocarbons lies between 0.01 and 4.0 mg/kg. This method is ideal for detecting the presence of refined veg oils (olive, olive-pomace, sunflower, soybean, palm, etc.) in virgin olive oil since refined oils contain stigmastadienes and virgin oils do not.
