Determination of Crude Glycerin, Titrimetric Method
2017
2
665.0288 AOCS 7th ed. 2017-2019 rev. Ref. (Loose-Leaves FL2)
This method determines the glycerol content of industrial glycerins. Glycerol is oxidized by sodium periodate in a strongly acidic medium. The formic acid produced by the reaction is titrated with a standard solution of sodium hydroxide. The glycerol content is expressed as a percentage (m/m). Applicable to industrial glycerins. This method is not applicable in the presence of organic compounds containing more than two hydroxyl groups on adjacent carbon atoms, such as sugars. These compounds may also give rise to formic acid and will interfere in the glycerol determination.
