2017

665.0288 AOCS 7th ed. 2017-2019 rev. Ref.
Residual hexane content of extracted meals is determined by heating the sample at 80 °C in a closed vessel after addition of an internal standard and determining hexane in the headspace by gas chromatography. This method is applicable to the determination of “free” volatile hydrocarbons, expressed in terms of hexane, remaining in animal and vegetable fats and oils after extraction with hydrocarbon-based solvents. It is suitable for the determination of quantities of hexane between 10 and 1500 mg/kg (ppm) in fat or oil. This method is equivalent to International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Standard Method (IUPAC) 2.607 (References, 1 and 2).
