Cadmium Content by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry
2017

665.0288 AOCS 7th ed. 2017-2019 rev. Ref.
The oil or fat is incinerated and atomized in a suitable graphite tube furnace with a platform connected to an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, previously calibrated using standard solutions of an organocompound of cadmium. The metal content is determined from the observed absorption at a wavelength of 228.8 nm. Palladium is added as a matrix modifier in order to prevent loss of cadmium during the thermal pretreatment. Applicable to the determination of trace amounts (µg/kg) of cadmium in all types of crude or refined edible oils and fats. This method is equivalent to International Organization for Standardization Method 15774:2000 (References, 1).
