The test portion is carbonized in the presence of magnesium hydroxycarbonate and then ashed. The ash is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid after which the phosphorus is determined colorimetrically by the molybdenum blue method. This method specifies a colorimetric method for the determination of the phosphorus content of animal and vegetable oils and fats.
