Free Gossypol in Cottonseed and Cottonseed By-Products, Rapid Method

This method for estimating free gossypol (FG) consists of adding water and acetone separately to a fixed sample weight, mixing, filtering, diluting with 65% acetone, and reading absorbance on a spectrophotometer. Applicable to full-fat cottonseed, cottonseed meats, or expanded collets and solvent-extracted cottonseed meal that contain FG within the ranges of 0.02–0.25% and 0.9–1.8%.
