This method describes a generic combustion method for the determination of crude protein in soybean meal. Combustion at high temperature in pure oxygen frees nitrogen, which is measured by thermal ­conductivity detection and then converted to equivalent protein by an appropriate numerical factor. This is a replacement method for the mercury catalyst and titanium dioxide/copper sulfate Kjeldahl methods and has two advantages: (1) less time is needed for nitrogen determination, and (2) hazardous and toxic ­chemicals are not utilized. This method is applicable for the determination of crude protein in soybean meal (References, 1, 3).
