This method describes a generic combustion method for the determination of crude protein. Combustion at high temperature in pure oxygen frees nitrogen, which is measured by thermal conductivity detection and then converted to equivalent protein by an appropriate numerical factor. This is an alternative method to the mercury catalyst Kjeldahl method and has two advantages: 1) less time is needed for nitrogen determination, and 2) hazardous and toxic chemicals are not utilized. This generic method is applicable to determine crude protein in animal feeds, oilseed meals and oilseeds (References, 1, 3). Refer to Ba 4f-00 for the NOPA/AOCS Certified Laboratory referee method.
