“Free” hexane content of extracted meals is determined by heating the sample at 80 °C in a closed vessel after addition of an internal standard and determining hexane in the headspace by gas chromatography. This method is applicable to the determination of “free” volatile hydrocarbons, expressed in terms of hexane, remaining in oilseed residues after extraction with hydrocarbon-based solvents. This method is equivalent to International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Standard Method 1.172 (References, 1 and 2).
