Glucosinolate Content in Rapeseed and Canola by HPLC

This method, adopted from Part 1 of ISO 9167 (References, 1), specifies a procedure for the determination of the content of different glucosinolates in rapeseed (colza) by extraction of glucosinolates in a methanol solution, then purification and enzymatic desulfation on ion-exchange resins, followed by determination using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with gradient elution and ultraviolet detection. This method does not determine glucosinolates that are substituted on the glucose molecule, but these compounds are of little importance in commercial rapeseed.
