The method involves microwave-assisted digestion of samples with nitric acid in closed vessels, followed by pH adjustment with ammonium hydroxide solution. Alkalization with ammonium hydroxide helps convert volatile iodine to the more stable iodide (I ) or iodate (IO3 ) species. Also, a surfactant (Triton X-100) was used to prevent memory e|ects caused by adsorption of iodine onto glass surfaces and peristaltic pump tubing during the determination of total iodine by ICP/MS. Tellurium (Te) was used as the internal standard.
